Diá de los Muertos

A community healing returns to downtown

The Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara’s Día de los Muertos Calenda returned to Downtown Santa Barbara this past weekend to much fanfare. Thousands lined State Street eagerly awaiting the vibrant, family-friendly procession of dance and music rooted in ancient customs shared across Mexico and Central America. Now in its third year, the annual event honors those who have passed by celebrating life itself. Calenda is both a celebration and an act of visibility, making Indigenous cultures seen and honored in spaces where they have historically been marginalized. Dalia Garcia, Executive Director, states emphatically “at MCASB, we remain steadfast in our belief that art and justice are inseparable.” Starting on the steps of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, the procession continued on to De La Guerra Plaza with dancing, music, food, and a market with artist and artisan vendors in partnership with Su’nan The Space. mcasantabarbara.org‍ ‍sbma.net
