A Slice of Heaven

These days, the welcome to the FOUR SEASONS RESORT LANAI begins before guests ever set foot on that Hawaiian island with the relaxed elegance of the hotel’s luxe lounge at the Honolulu airport. It’s another aspect of the attentive sophistication of the ocean-side resort, which reopened in February after substantial renovations.

Screen Shot 2017-04-19 at 4.48.04 PMScreen Shot 2017-04-19 at 4.50.21 PMLocated on a bluff overlooking the protected waters of Hulopoe Bay, the Four Seasons’ 213 rooms and suites now reflect the lush tropical ambiance, with teak and zebra wood accents surrounding furnishings of rosewood, leather, and linen in a calming neutral palette. Dining choices range from the contemporary Japanese cuisine of Nobu Lanai to the Hawaiian seafood and steak dishes of One Forty (named for the square mileage of the comma-shaped isle), while the lobby lounge offers the perfect spot to savor a sunset cocktail.

And though Lanai’s varied terrain beckons adventurers with end-of-the-road beaches, dirt roads for four-wheel drive exploring, upcountry horse and hiking trails, and otherworldly volcanic rock formations, the most satisfying activity may simply be giving in to the island atmosphere and doing nothing at all. Rates: From $1,150/night. 808-565-2000. JOAN TAPPER
