Jaffurs Wine Cellars 819 E. Montecito St., Santa Barbara, 805-962-7003, jaffurswine.com. Craig Jaffurs is well-known for his Roussanne, Viognier, Petite Sirah, Grenache, and Syrah.

Kalyra by the Sea 212 State St., Santa Barbara, 805-965-8606, kalyrawinery.com. Australian-born Mike Brown started Kalyra (“a wild and pleasant place” in the Australian Aboriginal language) in 1989. Especially decadent are any of his dessert wines.

Kunin Wines 28 Anacapa St., Santa Barbara, 805-963-9633, kuninwines.com. Winemaker Seth Kunin is known for staying true to the characteristics of the grapes he uses. Try his 2007 Pape Star ($25), a Grenache/Mourvedre/Syrah blend.

Municipal Winemakers 28 Anacapa St., Santa Barbara, 805-931-6864, municipalwinemakers.com. This tasting room offers six different creations—such as the crisp 2009 Bright White Riesling ($18) and Rhône-style 2008 Bright Red ($22)—from winemaker Dave Potter. Stop by Thursday through Monday from 11 am to 6 pm and check out the tasting notes on one of the iPads.

Oreana Winery & Marketplace 205 Anacapa St., Santa Barbara, 805-962-5857, oreanawinery.com. Christian Garvin’s Pinot Noir, Syrah, and small lots of sparkling wine are blended, bottled, and stored at this downtown winery and tasting room, a great stop for a weekend afternoon sip.

Santa Barbara Winery 202 Anacapa St., Santa Barbara, 805-963-3633, sbwinery.com. Established in 1962, Santa Barbara Winery—one of the oldest in the county—currently produces Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah.

Whitcraft Winery 36 S. Calle Cesar Chavez, Ste. A, Santa Barbara, 805-730-1680, whitcraftwinery.com. One of Santa Barbara County’s original winemakers, Chris Whitcraft has been producing high-quality wines since 1978. Now, he focuses on Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Lagrein (a red grape that’s a relative of Syrah).

East Valley Vineyard 4960 Baseline Ave., Santa Ynez, 805-455-1412, eastvalleywines.com. David Dascomb specializes in reds, namely Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Sangiovese.

Gainey Vineyard 3950 E. Hwy. 246, Santa Ynez, 805-688-0558, gaineyvineyard.com. This Spanish-style vineyard, winery, and gourmet tasting room is a relaxing place
to spend an afternoon in the valley as well as a great location for a private event.

Great Oaks Ranch and Vineyard 2450 Calzada Ave., Santa Ynez, 805-686-0895, greatoaksranch.com. Winemaker Andrew Murray makes
excellent wine out of this vineyard’s Syrah grapes.

Roblar Winery and Vineyards 3010 Roblar Ave., Santa Ynez, 805-686-2603, roblarwinery.com. This viticultural experience in the valley not only boasts 38 acres of Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, and Merlot (and sells Syrah and Cabernet Franc as well) but also a commercial kitchen and cooking school, vineyard tours, and picnic grounds.

Sunstone Vineyards & Winery 125 Refugio Rd., Santa Ynez, 800-313-9463, sunstonewinery.com. The Rice family’s French country-style property is a great place to take out-of-town guests for wine
tasting as well as a beautiful location for private events.


Blackjack Ranch Winery 2205 Alamo Pintado Rd., Solvang, 805-686-9922, blackjackranch.com. After inventing, patenting, copyrighting, and trademarking California blackjack (play goes to 22 instead of 21) in 1989, Roger Wisted opened Blackjack Ranch Winery—a 30-year culmination of passion about wine.

Buttonwood Farm Winery 1500 Alamo Pintado Rd., Solvang, 805-688-3032, buttonwoodwinery.com. Winemaker Karen Steinwachs stays true to the tradition of sustainable vineyard management and environmental sensitivity while incorporating her own style in creating small-lot wines.

Carhartt Vineyard and Winery 1691 Alamo Pintado Rd., Solvang, 805-688-0685, carharttvineyard.com. Brook and Mike Carhartt create small lots of Sauvignon Blanc, rosé, Merlot, and Syrah in the Santa Ynez Valley, where Mike’s family has raised cattle and horses since the early 1900s.

D’Alfonso & Curran Wine Group 1557 Mission Dr., Solvang, 805-688-3494, d-cwines.com. Owner and winemaker Kris Curran started her own label in 1997 and has continued to seek the optimum ripeness and integrity of the grapes.

Lincourt Vineyards 1711 Alamo Pintado Rd., Solvang, 805-688-8554, lincourtwines.com. Bill Foley’s 30-acre estate and winery creates Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot, and Syrah.

Lucas and Lewellen Vineyards and Winery 1645 Copenhagen Dr., Solvang, 805-686-9336, llwine.com. Winemaker Megan McGrath-Gates and owners Royce Lewellen and Louis Lucas create wines from 400 acres of grapes in the Santa Ynez Valley, Los Alamos, and Santa Maria.

Mandolina Wines 1665 Copenhagen Dr., Solvang, 805-686-5506, mandolinawines.com. Mandolina—a side label of Lucas and Lewellen—makes Italian varietals.

Morovino Winery 433 Alisal Rd., Ste. B, Solvang, 805-693-8466, morovino.com. Italian-born Gerry Moro has been making wines in the valley since 1994.

Paige 23 Vineyard 805-686-0015, paige23wines.com. In 1999, Joe Kalina and wine consultant Chris Keller created Paige 23, known for its food-friendly Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah.

Rideau Vineyard 1562 Alamo Pintado Rd., Solvang, 805-688-0717, rideauvineyard.com. Originally a guest ranch on the stage coach route between Santa Ynez and Santa Barbara, Rideau’s historic El Alamo Pintado adobe, dating back to 1769, is now a tasting room in which Louisiana-born Iris Rideau serves a selection of her Rhône-varietal and award-winning wines.

Royal Oaks Winery 1651 Copenhagen Dr., Solvang, 805-693-1740. Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon (for blending), and Merlot are the three varietals grown on the Royal Oaks Vineyard, though the winery processes other varietals as well.

Rusack Vineyards 1819 Ballard Canyon Rd., Solvang, 805-688-1278, rusackvineyards.com. Geoff Rusack and Alison Wrigley Rusack’s tasting room features an inviting redwood deck built around four beautiful oaks—a picture-perfect place for a picnic or just sipping wine and enjoying the view.

Shoestring Vineyard and Winery 800 E. Hwy. 246, Solvang, 805-693-8612, shoestringwinery.com. Bring a picnic, sit under the olive trees, and enjoy Bill and Roswitha Craig’s award-winning, limited-production Pinot Grigio, Sangiovese, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon.


Alma Rosa Winery 7250 Santa Rosa Rd., Buellton, 805-688-9090, almarosawinery.com. Stop by Richard and Thekla Sanford’s tasting room on Rancho El Jabalí. The couple has been growing grapes in the Sta. Rita Hills since 1970, and with fruit from more than 100 certified organic acres, they focus on producing mainly Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Noir.

Casa Cassara Winery & Vineyard 291 Valley Station Rd., Buellton, 805-688-8691, casacassarawinery.com. Stop by the Valley Station tasting room to sample new releases by winemaker John Krska, purchase wine accessories, and peruse works by local artists.

Hartley Ostini Hitching Post Wines at the Hitching Post Restaurant, 406 E. Hwy. 246, Buellton, 805-688-0676, hitchingpost2.com. Gray Hartley and Frank Ostini have been
making Pinot Noir, Syrah, and a Cabernet Franc/Merlot blend since 1979.

Kenneth-Crawford Wines 59 Industrial Way, Buellton, 805-693-1340, kennethcrawford.com. Winemakers Kenneth Gummere and Mark Crawford Horvath work with local vineyards to make Syrah, Pinot Noir, and Grenache.

Lafond Winery & Vineyards 6855 Santa Rosa Rd., Buellton, 805-688-7921, lafondwinery.com. Tasting is a relaxing event at Lafond, where you can stroll the bucolic grounds while you try its many different wines.

Mosby Winery 9496 Santa Rosa Rd., Buellton, 800-706-6729, mosbywines.com. Mosby’s lineup includes Dolcetto (a dry, dark red Italian varietal), the Zinfandel-like Teroldego, and Primativo.

Terravant Wine Company 70 Industrial Way, Buellton, 805-686-9400, terravant.com. Terravant’s Avant tasting room offers more than 32 different wines as well as an extensive menu of savory tapas.

Stop by the Dierbergs’ tasting room to sample selections from their three wine labels: Dierberg (premium Burgundian varietals), Star Lane (Bordeaux-style blends and Syrah), and Three Saints (the “great value” label).

Flying Goat Cellars 1520 E. Chestnut Ct., Ste. A, Lompoc, 805-736-9032, flyinggoatcellars.com. Twenty-five-year veteran winemaker Norm Yost has released a new addition of sparkling wines—Goat Bubbles Blanc de Blancs ($36)—an effervescent, sparkly Chardonnay.

Foley Estates Vineyard and Winery 6121 E. Hwy. 246, Lompoc, 805-737-6222, foleywines.com. Foley’s Rancho Santa Rosa reflects Bill Foley and winemaker Kris Curran’s devotion to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

a rare taste of California history—as well as luscious Pinot Noir.

Huber Cellars and Vineyard 4892 Hapgood Rd., Lompoc, 805-736-3854, hubercellars.com. This 24-acre vineyard is the only one in Santa Barbara that produces the deep red German varietal Dornfelder.

Jalama Wines 308 N. 9th Street, 805-735-8937, jalamawines.com. Mark Cargasacchi crafts small lot estate Pinot Noir, Pinot Grigio, and a Syrah-based “El Capitan” blend.

Ken Brown Wines 1633 W. Central Ave., Lompoc, 805-688-4482, kenbrownwines.com. Ken Brown’s small family business specializes in Pinot Noir from Sta. Rita Hills. Check out any of his 2005 vintages—some of the best he’s created in his 30-plus years as a winemaker in the county.

Loring Wine Company 1034 W. Aviation Drive, Lompoc, 805-736-0053, loringwinecompany.com. Nestled within the “Lompoc Wine Ghetto”, this small winery specializes in tantalizing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Melville Vineyards and Winery 5185 E. Hwy. 246, Lompoc, 805-735-7030, melvillewinery.com. Ron Melville and Greg Brewer create Viognier, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah at this Mediterranean-style winery in the Sta. Rita Hills.

New Vineland/Piedrassasi 1501 E Chestnut Ave Lompoc, 805-736-6784. Established in 2003, New Vineland/Piedrassi has since expanded their area of expertise from making great syrah to include Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc, and Rosé.

Nicolaysen Family Vineyard 1509 East Chestnut Avenue Lompoc, 805-434-9300, nicolaysenfamilyvineyards.com. This family vineyard which produces syrah, pinot blanc, and a wine known as “Our 11”—a Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Petite Syrah blend—was the culmination of Bob Nicolaysen’s lifelong passion for wine.

Presidio Vineyard & Winery 2755 Purisima Rd., Lompoc, 888-930-9463, presidiowinery.com. This 30-acre vineyard is certified organic and biodynamic.

Samsara 1500 East Chestnut Court, Lompoc, 805-331-2292, samarawine.com. Samsara owners Chad and Mary specialize in producing limited releases of Pinot Noir and Syrah.

Zotovich Family Vineyards 1500 East Chestnut Court, 805-748-0824. Established in 2004, Steve Zotovich crafts an Estate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah at this vineyard nestled in the heart of the Santa Rita Hills.

Artiste Impressionist Winery & Tasting Studio 2948 Grand Ave., Studio E, Los Olivos, 805-686-2626, artiste.com. At the first “tasting studio” of its kind in Santa Barbara, not only can you try vintages, but you can create art on canvases or in sketchbooks set around the room while you’re at it.

Au Bon Climat 805-937-9801, aubonclimat.com. For nearly 25 years, Jim Clendenen has focused on Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir.

Beckmen Vineyards 2670 Ontiveros Rd., Los Olivos, 805-688-8664, beckmenvineyards.com. From a 365-acre vineyard, Steve Beckmen harvests and produces Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, and others.

Carina Cellars 2900 Grand Ave., Ste. A, Los Olivos, 805-688-2459, carinacellars.com. Try Joey Tensley’s 2006 Mourvedre, Central Coast ($36)—the flavors of clove, thyme, cranberries, cherries, and cocoa go well with barbecued meats and grilled veggies for a great fall party.

Consilience 2933 Grand Ave., Los Olivos, 805-691-1020, consiliencewines.com. One of Brett Escalera’s top sellers is his Santa Barbara County Syrah ($18), perfect for pairing with a juicy steak.

Curtis Winery 5249 Foxen Canyon Rd., Los Olivos, 805-686-8999, curtiswinery.com. Curtis Winery is exclusively committed to crafting Rhône-style varietals.

Daniel Gehrs Wines 2939 Grand Ave., Los Olivos, 805-693-9686, danielgehrswines.com. All tasters, regardless of their level of expertise, are welcome at this small family-owned and operated winery and tasting room.

Demetria Estate 6701 Foxen Canyon Rd., Los Olivos, 805-686-2345, demetriaestate.com. Established in 2005, Demetria Estate is a family owned winery that produces artfully crafted wines from the Santa Ynez Valley and Sta. Rita Hills. Winemaker Michael Roth uses low yields, sustainable and biodynamic farming practices, and gentle winemaking procedures.

Evan’s Ranch 2901 Grand Ave., Los Olivos, gaineyvineyard.com. One of Gainey Vineyard’s properties in the Sta. Rita Hills provides grapes for a small quantity of high-quality wines offered at this new tasting room.

Fess Parker Winery and Vineyard 6200 Foxen Canyon Rd., Los Olivos, 805-688-1545, fessparker.com. Founded by actor/entrepreneur Fess Parker, this vineyard and winery—the perfect spot for a picnic or private event—crafts uncompromising wines.

Firestone Vineyard 5000 Zaca Station Rd., Los Olivos, 805-688-3940, firestonewine.com. The Firestones (famous for beer, local politics, and at one point, tires) founded their Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon-producing vineyard in 1972.

Longoria Wines 2935 Grand Ave., Los Olivos, 805-688-0305, longoriawine.com. One of Rick Longoria’s well-known lines is the Blues Cuvée—every other year, he commissions a different artist to create a blues-inspired label for a red wine.

Margerum Wine Company 5249 Foxen Canyon Rd., Los Olivos, 805-686-8500, margerumwinecompany.com. Doug Margerum crushes and blends his grapes behind Curtis Vineyard in Los Olivos.

Stolpman 2434 Alamo Pintado Ave., Los Olivos, 805-688-0400, stolpmanvineyards.com. Syrah is one of the premier grapes of this Ballard Canyon vineyard.

Verdad 805-784-0747 verdadwines.com. With this label, Bob Lindquist and Louisa Sawyer Lindquist spotlight Spanish varietals.
