Blakeney WaveSurfer girl and onetime Santa Barbara Magazine people profile Blakeney Sanford,, continues to impress us with her evolving art career. This hometown talent is best known for large-scale installations such as a giant wave made of metal and epoxy resin panels that recently graced the Los Angeles film premiere for Ultimate Wave Tahiti, attended by famous surfers Kelly Slater and Raimana Van Bastolaer. “I’ve always been drawn to large-scale work and installation sculpture, with an interest in transforming spaces and offering experiences,” says Sanford, who has been working as an artist since 2002. In her new Shark Park Series (from $60), the four-by-six-inch works featuring playful bikini silhouettes burst with color, texture, and a touch of opulence (she incorporates reflective gold leaf). Her handshaped wooden surfboards embellished with gold leaf and abalone were recently highlighted in Patagonia’s “Summer Favorites” catalog, and you can currently see her work in “Tidal Transformations: Carol Carbine and Blakeney Sanford” at Solvang’s Elverhøj Museum through September 5.
