Heidi Merrick

Heidi Merrick’s ENDLESS SUMMER – Daughter of legendary board shaper Al Merrick, the clothing designer talks sand, surf, and style…

CALM SEAS The best way to enjoy Stearns Wharf is to cruise around on a paddleboard. There’s a fantastic juxtaposition between the wharf’s tourism rush and quiet serenity of the water. My dad taught me to paddleboard there, and I miss sprinting across Cabrillo from the old Channel Islands Surfboards, cisurfboards.com, factory on Helena Street with our big boards in tow.

LOCAL EATS I absolutely love the stuffed grape leaves at Zooker’s, 5404 Carpinteria Ave., Carpinteria, 805-684-8893, zookerscafe.com. This small cafe is covered in Carpinteria-grown orchids and the menu is dotted with dishes using organic ingredients from local farming families.

ART AND POETRY IS NOT DEAD Writing notes seems like a dying art but I relish the gesture, and Iart exclusively send cards by local artist Amber O’Neill (pictured left). She has a seascape collection that’s like mailing a piece of home. Available at Porch, 5065 Carpinteria Ave., Carpinteria, 805-684-0300, porchsb.com.

ANTIQUATED REMEDIES When June-gloom hits, I enjoy antiquing. I’m working on a collection of still lifes and French Market, 2173 Ortega Hill Rd., Summerland, 805-695-0655, has a beautiful selection. I’ve also found antique linens so inspiring they haunt me while I scour fabric shows for something just as lovely.

CLOSE TO THE VINE I love wine tasting, but what I love even more is not having to drive to the Santa Ynez Valley! On June 26, the Santa Barbara Natural History Museum hosts the Santa Barbara Wine Festival, 805-682-4711.

SUMMER IS RINCON… This iconic surf point defines a summer day if it’s breaking, and there’s always a reunion of friends on the shore. I vacilitate between watching old surf stars or playing in the water with the kids…

I’ll BE READING Big God (Regal, 2009), biggodthebook.com, where my brother, Britt Merrick talks about great faith. He begins the memoir with an account of his own heart-breaking and triumphant journey.

THE LAP OF LUXURY is my Missoni Karlos beach throw ($300) from Saks Fifth Avenue, saksfifthavenue.com. It sets the mood to sunbathe on something gorgeous while protecting my newborn daughter, Hiver, from the summer rays under a Moroccan tent.

glassesI’LL BE WEARING black cat eye sunglasses from British designer, Giles Deacon. I saw them first on model Dree Hemingway (pictured left) and immediately started my search for them. Also, the updated version of my Heidi Merrick Santa Barbara swimsuit (pictured above) in black is so wearable; in fact, I have about six of them and repeat them in my collections by adding little changes every summer. Available at heidimerrick.com.
